Argand Fireplace Mantle Lamp

Posted by Fil Graff, Guild Secretary: Dave has found a complete
mantel lamp, argand burners (complete with chimneys) and sahdes.
Beautiful, yes? Question is: origin? English? US? Who made it, and
when? The shades appear to be Sandwich, and I suspect maybe Dietz as
maker, but this is sort of out of my league! Please, if anyone
recognizes this lamp, let us and dave Benson know. Thanks!

Hello Dave and Fil. - The lamp has a very attractive appearance. To
judge, however, what is the likely origin and maker, the lamp needs
undressing. Moreover, with all the prisms in the way, I can't make
out whether all the original parts are on the lamp. I am a bit uneasy
about lamps with double marble construction and on this particular
lamp about the close proximity of the oil feeding tube and the oil
font bottom. Somewhere should be located the oil supply shut-off
valve handle. Fil, I was not aware of that Dietz ever made mantle
Argand lamps. To be on the safe side, one might predict in the first
go around that we look here at a British product. To determine
whether the shades and chimneys are original period pieces, one has
to have a close look at them. There are a large variety of later
vintage pieces on the market. Heinz Baumann

Heinz: "Dim Wick-edness" has spread to the Guild page! I withdraw the
comment about Dietz! What I remembered as Argands in the Dietz
catalogue were candle girondelles! British origin is what was
originally proposed by Carl Gaeth, and John Claypole offered
Messenger as a possible.
Dave: could you "undress" the lamp, and
get a close up of the burners and font? :: Fil ::

I have posted several photos of the lamp showing the burner and it's
parts and the oil resevoir. I have stripped off the prisms so people
can see the lamp. One burner came loose but I can fix that. So far it
has been suggested that it is not American nor English but could
possibly be French. If you can offer any help in identifying it I
would appreciate it. The photos can be seen at my home page
