Unknown Lamp [Index: (Possible) Plume & Atwood] by Heather

I came across this large oil lamp when cleaning out my grandmothers
house. I have looked through lots of books and have not found
anything like it. The entire lamp, with globe, is approx. 2 1/2
feet high. The glass globe is about 1 foot diameter. The base is
metal (brass?) with a raised designs of elephants and other Indian
theme patterns. The only makers mark is a C stamped in the base.
Any information anyone can give me as to a time period or
background of it would be very helpful. Thanks

Heather: Great Merciful Heavens! That IS a monster! Was your
Grandmother or other relative ever IN India or Pakistan? It
looks like something from "Gunga Din"...I'm
guessing NOT US or European in origin. But I'm going to be
no help at all! Ara? Archbishop? Some other well-travelled
Guild Member? Anyone? HELP!

Actually, none of my family ever visited there as far as i
know, however my Grandfathers Aunt (what relative is that?)
did have a beau who traveled all over the world and sent her
stuff (like tapestries from europe, and rugs from turkey).
That would have been around 1880-1900. It is possible it is
from him. Heather ****** attached is a close up of some of
the detail on the lamp base

Hi Heather, It would be interesting to see the BURNER of this
lamp, and know if the globe is really a globe or something
fitted later to the original lamp. Is tha black background
behind tha globe part of the lamp, like a reflecor? Is this a
stove, maybe? I don't have enough elements for a reliable
answer.

Thanks for your questions.----As far as I can tell that
colored glass globe is the original (there are small clamp
arms that attach it to the base), however there is a glass
chimney that fits over the burner inside the globe. The
burner is a standard kerosine lamp burner (like on my
huricane lamps) with a wick. Following is a side shot of the
burner.----The black background behind the lamp is just
something in the house, the picture wasnt taken against a
solid background. [Secretarys note: The burner is a P and A
Duplex, missing the burner cone.]
