Can you tell me anything about this lamp? [Index: Plume & Atwood]

Hello :) I have am embossed metal lamp that is almost 21 inches tall
to top of burner that is marked Royal. The only marks I can find are
on the burner where it has ROYAL and in a circle are patent dates in
a circle the first being PAT'D AUG.14,88 and the last being JAN.5,92.
Can you tell me who made this lamp and around when? What do I need to
complete it(What is missing)? What is the value of it as is. Thank
you so very much for your time.
Eileen

Eileen: What you have is a Plume and Atwood Banquet Lamp with the
Royal kerosene (their most common center draft lamp set up) burner
and font. Could have been made anywhere from about 1895 to 1915 or
so. It appears exteriorly complete, except for a chimney and shade or
globe. The wick cannot be judged from a photo, but likely needs
replacing if you are going to burn it. See if the wick raising
mechanism works by pushing the up-side down "L" shaped rod with the
ball on top up and down. If it moves, see if when it is all the way
up, any wick can be seen outside the large central shaft that the
screened flame spreader (where you found "Royal") sits in. You can
make a modern replacement wick work well (the same wick sold to fit a
Rayo) by removing one whole layer of vertical threads from the weave
(necessary even on a Rayo, as these wicks are made for lanterns, not
lamps!). The chimney will likely be a 2 5/8" x 10" "regular". As
these lamps were designed to be at the center of a dining room table,
they look best with an etched or cut clear 4" fitter globe (to let as
much light through as possible, while still hiding the flame from the
eye). A globe ring would likely have to be almost custom fit, unless
someone has an original.
I cannot, and will not give values here,
as this is not a commercial enterprize or an appraisal service. Your
lamp appears to have a good nickel finish, and be in very nice
condition. Hope this helps! :: Fil Graff ::
