Kosmos Lamps

I am currently renovating my house, (in England) which was built in
1910, the house originally had no electrical supply, and has never
had a gas supply, therefore we can only presume it was lit by oil
lamps. So far I have been unable to find much in the way of
information with respect to the makes and models of oil lamps
available in the UK between 1910 and 1925.... Can you help?? Also...
Having read some of your questions and answers, I realise that you
are not a commercial organisation and have no affiliations to any
companies, however, I have come across 2 or 3 companies in the USA
selling "Kosmos" lamps which are supposedly made in France (I can't
find out where), while the idea of modern reproductions are probably
totally abhorrent, could you please advise me of who makes these
lamps and where in Europe I can buy them?? (If I buy in Europe, I
don't have to pay UK taxes and the postage is cheaper!!) Thanks

Graham: I don't know of any new "Kosmos LAMPS", but I do use and sell
some EXCELLENT new "Kosmos" burners, chimneys, etc. made in France,
and imported and offered by a US wholesaler. I almost think they are
made from old tooling, as they show definate signs of pre-WWII Ehrich
and Graetz design. They're made of quite decent brass, work extremely
well, and take a chemical-aging patina nicely. The wick knobs
distinguish them from old ones, so there's not likely going to be
rash of fake "old lamps" out there!
Perhaps M. Ara of Lumiere de
L'Oeil in Paris could be of some help (see link thru "FLAMES" on the
Giild Links page) in your search. The Kosmos burner was almost
endemic in Europe under a variety of brand names and manufacturers.
There were many US copies as well. If you are trying to add some
ENGLISH lighting of the period, you'll want to check Hinks, Messinger
and other UK manufacturers. Check the Historic Lighting Club on the
GuildMart page...English lighting collectors club. Perhaps one of the
UK folks with some appropriate lighting for sale will contact you
because of this question!
