what is the signifigance of the design on the side of these lamps,
I recently found one with "hearts" imprinted on the side
and it has a twist (or spiral) handle? Is this unique or
common?

Wilson: I would suppose they were the blacksmith or tinker's
idea to make the lamp look pretty. They'd serve no practical
purpose, as a lamp with hearts wouldn't burn the rendered
lard or bear grease fuel any better than a plain one. In a forged
iron one, the embossing would be extra work, and might have sold
for a bit more. You could also have one of the myriad of
reproductions that have designs on them to appeal to the modern
buyer. Twists in the forged handle are just as easy to do when
the iron is hot as plain, and again, are "prettier". ::
