what is the signifigance of the design on the side of these lamps, I recently found one with "hearts" imprinted on the side and it has a twist (or spiral) handle? Is this unique or common?

In a forged iron one, the embossing would be extra work, and might have sold for a bit more. You could also have one of the myriad of reproductions that have designs on them to appeal to the modern buyer.
