Date: Wed, 03 Jun 1998 07:34I work for the Historical Society of Delaware. I am the director at the Read House & Gardens in New Castle, De., one of several sites the Society owns. We are looking for reproduction Argand lamps. The house has been furnished according to very extensive inventories and we need two pairs of Argand lamps. We would love it if they worked but if they don't that's okay too. Monticello used to have them in their catalog but they have stopped carrying them, evidently there was a problem with leaking.

Hi Fil, yes I know your shuddering, but we are implementing a program both for adult and children, where we discuss lighting history and we would like something that we can actually light, that we know will be in good working order. As a non-profit it would be impossible for us to assume the cost of overhauling an antique Argand. Thanks for all the help.

My advice to the Historical Society of Delaware would be to buy an antique Argand set at one of the antique auctions. These lamps are rather frequently offered and are generally listed in the big national antiques journals such as the "Antiques and Arts Weekly" of "Maine Antique Digest". Just for getting an impression, the next auction of Neal Auction Company includes several types. Many of the lamp sets have reproduction shades, thus making their purchase price more affordable. Reproduction lamps will likely range in the same price category as the old ones.
