Fil,
A while ago, I purchased two CD lamps with mantle type burners.
One is a UK Super Sunlight from around 1930. Your book indicates on Page 7 that the lamp can take a Practicus bag.
The other was sold by Montgomery Ward in the early 1930's. From your book I think it was OEM from E&G as a Famos 120 (30'''). The burner gallery says "Made in Germany" and has slots (no holes like the Veritas Famos Superspeed). The burner knob appears to have opposing dragons on a hollow sun.
So the question of the hour is what if any modern mantle can I adapt to burn on these lamps. I get an very effective and clean blue flame on the German lamp. I have not tried the UK Super Sunlight.
Any thoughts would be welcome. Regards, Fred
PS: By the way Bill Courter says you are the expert on making things
work together.

Fred:
I blush at the compliments! But these CAN be "fixed". The Super Sunlight is a 1909 30''' Kronos (this is the same burner that was sold in the US as the "Conia" to make a Rayo into a mantle lamp! It claimed 280-some cp, which is likely twaddle, but it IS darned bright. It has a HUGE mantle! I've had one burning (weakly, but only because of lack of HUGE mantle bag!) with an OLD Welsbach Aladdin mantle, and may have briefly gotten 120-150 cp. These are larger than the MLCoA Aladdin mantles by about 15%, but still only come to the edge of the flame hole on the 30''' burner. At the moment, that's the best we can do, unless someone has some old Conia or Montgomery Ward (they sold a burner of this size also) HUGE mantles (I have an empty box...lots of good that does!)
As for the Ehrich and Graetz (the double dragon and the sun logo), what you likely have is the "Eugeos", which was sold in the US, but I didn't know by whom. It is identical to the Famos 120, and so can easily take a current Aladdin mantle bag. This is a bit smaller than original, but burns pretty well. Work with the Eugeos FIRST...it is closer to Aladdin size, and thus not so threatening.
In both cases, I hope you have the mantle FRAME to work with! We can make do with substitute mantle bags, but the frames are critical to get a mantle positioned and then centered! The mantle frame on a current Aladdin Loxon, or KoneKap mantle is too small to go over the burner "cone". My Brit friends make hand-tooled mantle frames...a ring to sit on the burner "floor", and tube supports at the sides (watch chimney clearance!) with set screws to hold the wire hanger. Frequently the existing Aladdin wire will do, if pulled out of the frame to get the maximum length. A new-made Famos frame for the Eugeos can perhaps be found for you in the UK.
Sounds complicated, but once you try it (break a few mantle
bags...
they're replaceable!) and get the hang of it, it's easy! Let me know
how
you make out! I burn my Eugeos fairly frequently with a Welsbach
Aladdin bag, and figure I can get about 100 cp (85 to 90 with an
Aladdin bag). The SS/Conia/30''' Kronos likely WON'T be a
"satisfactory"
conversion until we can get some bigger mantles made (and we ARE
working on that!) Good luck...burn them in good health!

In question 4 (from Fred Smith) you said the EUGEOS of Ehrich &
Graetz is identical to the FAMOS 120. As far as I know the EUGEOS
dated from 1906 and was an 'early' type of mantle burner and compared
with the FAMOS 120 (trade mark (26-1-1925)of Geppert & Stadelmann
from
Nurnberg Germany) much more old fashioned. Do you have other and more
information about this?

Anton: a later model of the Eugeos 30'''(I beleive that's the size designation) Center Draft than the ones we have catalogue pictures of (10, 15, 20 and 30''' CD, and a 15''' NCD) was sold in the US in the 30's, apparently even by Montgomery Ward. Both table lamps and font lamps were sold, all I have seen were nickel plated. The wick knob has a black insert with the E&G double dragon logo. The lamp has NO other markings. It is identical to the UK FAMOS 120 c/p burner, except for the wick knob design.Anton Kaim continues:
I know this:
On 25-2-1906 Ehrich & Graetz granted a patent in Germany for a
(Argand
type) mantle burner No.184032 (source:Kaiserlicher Patentampt Berlin)
and in the same year (a little bit earlier at 24-1-1906 No.84599)
they granted a trade mark "Eugeos".The trade mark Eugeos was used for
burners, lamps, chimney's, wicks, lanterns, mantles, ovens and
cookers. E&G also granted the same burner in Great Britain in 1906
(No.11001).
Jean Stadelmann from Nurnberg,Germany is the founder of Stadelmann & Company. This company made burners, lamps, mantles, lanterns etc. J.Stadelmann was also the holder of the Trade Marks "VERITAS"(since 1895), CALESCO (1905), LUCISCA (1907), WIZARD (1909), TRILUX (1909), ARIEL (1909) etc.; Geppert & Stadelmann were holders of the Trade Marks CANDESCO (1925) en FAMOS (1925). J.Stadelmann was also connected with S.Falk from London, hence Falk,Stadelmann & Co and by this the connection Veritas Famos Superspeed.
