Mantle Research project
  1. Mantle Research project by Fil Graff (fgraff@comcast.net)

On behalf of the Guild and The Historic Lighting Club (UK), I am doing some research on the sizes, durability, burn quality and light output of kerosene wick-fed mantle lamps. The largest bottom diameter mantles available to me are the old Welsbach Aladdins (I have a diminishing supply, but at the moment adequate for waht I'm doing). I have found that one mantle in my collection would be the proper size for another test, but the single example I have is broken! Does anyone out there have a (or better, SEVERAL) "Montgomery Ward Kerosene Mantle and Mantle Holder" stock number 86-7234 they would be willing to part with? I assume that this large diameter mantle was also available without the frame (IE: "bag" only); this would be fine, as the frame is irrelevant to my testing. I have no idea what lamp this mantle and frame was made for, or its date...there is no such info in the almost 3" diameter tube-with-caps package I have.
One mantle would help, but 6 would be better!
Several questions relating to this Inquiry...
one of the previous Inquiry answers suggests that Monkey-Ward sold the Conia/30'''Kronos burner on a lamp. Does anyone have a catlogue that shows this lamp?
Second, does anyone know what lamp M-W sold that the mantle stock number 86-7234 FIT? There is reference on the mantle package to "the new model lamp with a lock-on gallery" which suggests the lamp in question was sold for atleast several years. When? Again, anyone have a catalogue? Thanking you in advance! Fil Graff, Guild Secretary :)
