But if you have the Adobe reader Ver. 7, it doesn't matter which format you get, as you can specify printing size right in the program.

Subject: [Coleman] Pressure lamp catalog
It's crap...All the long hours straining your eyes on the Internet and wondering what, when, where, and who has now been answered by the Omnipotent Deity of Pressure Lamps Neil McRae and his herald Fil Graff.
Why just this morning I was looking in the catalog to identify a Turner lantern, a Nagel Chase lamp and a Roddy lantern I had picked up over the last few weeks. No need to jump onto the Internet and spend long hours away from my list of honey-do jobs, noooo. Now I have no excuses as to why the windows weren't cleaned and the lawn wasn't mowed and the oil changed. waaa waaa. . . . I can't wait till the Coleman addendum is released.
Excellent Work! I would like to take this opportunity to nominate Neil for a Pressure Pulitzer. Anyone second that motion??"

THE LAMP COLLECTORS GUIDE, Second Edition

A multi-part "Dictionary" of Kerosene, Gasoline, Gas, Acetylene and Alcohol fueled Lamps, Burners, Chimneys and other "renewables" from the US and Europe ca. 1870 to 1950. The Second Edition is about THREE times the length of the first! Cross-referenced, illustrated with catalogue images.Designed for easy identification of brands, sizes, fuels, and especially appropriate consumables. A brief lighting history and key historical points included.

The book is in 17 Sections (many are completely new, and all are heavily revised):
Introduction
Lamp Brands (type/fuel, manufacturers, origins, consumables)
General information section
US Burner Brands (details, consumables)
US kerosene Burners (pre-1890, with type, manufacturers, origins, consumables)
UK & European Burner brands
Early burners (image section)
Central Draft flame spreader images with maker identification
Wick knob design images (mostly European) with maker identification
Lamp Chimneys (sorted by "type")
Lamp Chimneys (sorted by fitter)
Interlude: catalogue and ad images
Chimney logos
Chimney images (catalogue pictures)
Burner Images (catalogue and photos)
Lamp term dictionaries
Chicago Pressure lamp makers

Review from Light International V1, #1:
"This thoroughly researched work contains page after page of lamp-comparison charts, lists and specifications of "renewables" in [nine] sections enabling collectors to identify old lamps and lamp parts. All brands appear in alphabetical order, and include many lamps [and burners] not previously documented....The material covered here is truly monumental! The real benefit to lamp collectors is to find all the information in one place!"

Although "encyclopedic" in scope, the book is more a DICTIONARY than an encyclopedia. There is information listed on a huge variety of lamps and burners from the period, but there is little "text". The Lamp Collectors Guide is designed to be a tool for identification and restoration, and NOT a complete study of every lamp, burner, etc, ever made. The emphasis is on the burners and their accoutrements. The author has tried NOT to duplicate comprehensive texts on individual brands and types of lamps like pressed pattern glass fonts. So this is NOT a book with a lot of DETAILED information on Aladdins, or Coleman, or Night Lamps, although they ARE covered with emphasis on the burners and consumables. If you wish a book on the Aladdin, buy IT! But if you are a collector of antique liquid fueled lighting, and wish a reference book to identify and perhaps assist in restoring an artifact, The Lamp Collectors Guide is the best available place to look!

Available from the Author:
US: Cost $30 US funds, plus $2.47 Media mail;
Canada: Cost $30 US Funds, plus $6.40 via "First-Class International" Postage.
England, Europe : Cost $30 US funds, plus $13.60 "First-Class International" Postage

TLCG II Update publication!

UK and European burner section

This section of The Lamp Collectors Guide, Second Edition got admittedly short shrift during the second edition editing. I have been hounded by several collectors, and as a result, what was 11 pages as printed is now 46 pages long! We have included every burner (side and center draft) we can find listed in the Guild Library catalogs. Yes, there are still some gaps in specifications, like original makers, chimney and wick specs, so there is still some detective work to do. But I think the collectors of European burners will be pleased with this section, sold as a supplement to the published book. It is bound the same way as the book, so if you have a local printer with "comb" binder capability, you can substitute these pages for what is presently in the book.

Available from the Author:
US: Cost $11 US funds, plus $1.48 First Class postage in the US.
Canada: Cost $11 US Funds, plus $2.24 via "First-Class International" Postage.
England, and central Europe: Cost $11 US funds, plus $5.40 "First-Class International" Postage.
HLC Members: Your club is selling this book! Support your club, and buy from them.
Sorry for the fuss, but to be sure of postage, everyone but US, Canada & the UK should contact me (best by e-Mail) for Postage.
Check, Money order or PAYPAL [PLEASE see Paypal instructions at botttom of page!] ONLY, US funds ONLY...I cannot handle credit cards!

Note there are TWO books from Australia in this section!

James Hinks & Sons, Ltd.
Birmingham and London
Lighting Catalogue

Produced from photocopy of a large size original by Eric Webb and Allin Hodson of Australia.
  •   132 pages on good quality clay-coat paper, spiral bound. Black & White images.
  •   Original has some pieces cut out.
  •   This printing sized to A4 paper, and everything available has been included.
  •   Catalogue dated post-1901 from internal clues (commemorative lamp for the Relief of Mafeking& Boer War, 1900, and citing of a 1901 Patent).
This project was undertaken in 2002 by two Australian collectors, working from a photocopy of an original. They did not attempt a reprint , as it simply made no economic sense to duplicate the original size and format. What they did do was make available at an acceptable quality and affordable price material that has NOT been previously available, and should not be lost.

Yes, there are some problems with the original that was copied. A previous owner scissored out portions of pages. The original copier of the catalogue chopped the margins on some of the pages. An early printing was missing one numbered page, but it, and several others have been found and added to the present printing.

But enough of what s wrong with it. What is RIGHT is that it is 128 pages of complete lamps of all kinds, plus shades and globes, founts and accoutrements. What good is that? How DO you identify a Hinks lamp for sure? Collectors have next to no reference material available from when Hinks was independent. With this catalog, you have several identification options. There are several pages of distinctive founts (glass and metal) and globes that were used in complete lamps. Can t find that particular Hand Lamp, Wrought Iron Table Lamp, Brass Table Lamp, Brass Pillar Lamp, Brass Banquet Lamp, Reading Lamp, Wrought Iron Bracket, Brass Bracket, Wrought Iron Hanging Lamp, Wrought Iron Hall Lamp, Brass Hall Lamp, Brass Harp Lamp, Brass Hanging Lamp, Billiard Light, Wrought Iron Floor Lamp (fixed and extendable), Tin Street Lamp, Back Lamp, Japanned Tin Lantern, Drum Stove (that s what I found flipping page to page)? Then go back and look at the component parts like the founts. It appears that many of the founts were used for years in various combinations, so although this is certainly dated reference, positive identification of later (and perhaps earlier) Hinks lamps can be made from the component parts.

This catalog recreation will likely be more valuable to British collectors than North American ones. Hinks was good about marking their burners, so identification is only occasionally a problem with rebrands. But the lamps they made over a 40 some year period are not often marked, and the Hinks Duplex burner was applied to lamps of many makers, which makes positive identification of LAMPS difficult. This book isn t cheap, and postage from Australia is not only slow, but expensive. But do not simply disregard this volume based on purchase price. You are not likely to find the material in this catalogue elsewhere at ANY price. If you are an info junkie like me, you will buy this book!

Aladdin Kerosene Lamps in Australia

By Allin C. Hodson
  •   203 pages, sewn and Perfect bound in A4 size
  •   copyright 1999, self published
American Aladdin collectors are perhaps aware of the bakelite Aladdin founts, some on very tall stems that appear at the Gathering, or on e-Bay, and are given better than passing reference in the second edition of the big book , Aladdin, the Magic Name in Lamps. There is just enough information on these lamps there to be tantalizing, and judging from the prices the lamps bring, this brief familiarity has made them rather desirable. Readers probably realize the bakelite fount was made in England originally, and then, in quite a different shape, in Australia by the Sydney branch of The Mantle Lamp Company, trading as Aladdin Industries Ltd. The interest in these bakelites has sometimes masked the fact that, prior to their introduction, a large range of metal fonts was made. These fonts were made in brass, copper, steel and combinations of these metals, and were painted in lacquers. Aladdin was a pioneer in the use of these finishes in domestic metalwork.

The thing that first attracted me to Allin s book (the product of 6 years work& the sort of thing that happens to a collector when the bug bites bad!) was the images of these graceful and tall stemmed banquet (in Australia, called family ) lamps. Several years later, I had the opportunity to buy one from an Australian mate, and did so with some joy. Of course, I have a variant 1630 not shown in the book (or catalogues either as it turns out), but I had a wonderful time looking for it, and ultimately writing Allin to ask what I had. [The generic reference to this series is at the bottom of p.105 and top of p.106.] The book is a treasure trove of different Aladdin products: the model 16 burner, two or three generations of bakelite, bakelite with wooden columns and brass components painted to match the plastic, design variations in metal founts, shades of all sorts and even pressure lanterns.

Some of the Australian-sold product was American-made, some British, and a wonderful variety was home grown. I don t think anybody can say they know Aladdins without having studied AKLIA the way they study ATMNL. The book, in my opinion, is that good! There are no color pictures amongst the 250 plus photographs and diagrams, but then there are few glass lamps that need the color section Bill Courter included. With e-Bay making markets world-wide, we can no longer afford to ignore legitimate foreign product like these. I have a pretty good collection of American Aladdins, but the collection would never be complete without the Silky Oak 1630 Family Lamp that lives in the tavern room.

Why s he telling us about this NOW? you ask. I ve known about the book for years. Perhaps so, but did you BUY one? If not, you re missing a big chunk in your lamping education!

Light and Heat From Hydrocarbon Appliances

Portrait of an Industry

By Dr. Hermann U. Lahde

This is a valuable reference written as a labor of love by the late Dr. Lahde to share his extensive knowledge and experience in the development of kerosene lamps, lanterns, heaters and stoves. He explains the principles of hydrocarbon burners that have provided light and heat for millions of people around the world; and, he challenges engineers to continue improvement of hydrocarbon burning appliances.

Dr. Lahde was born and educated in Germany. He held a Ph.D. from the Technical University of Berlin. He worked for Ehrich & Graetz from 1926 to 1945 prior to coming to America. He and Fritz Graetz hold two US patents. Dr. Lahde worked for Aladdin Industries, Inc from 1947 to 1960 and for American Thermos from 1960 to 1966. He retired and wrote this book, never published in his lifetime.

The book has 206 pages in 20 chapters covering the basics of fuels and combustion, wicks, wick burners and mantles, lanterns, stoves, and gasolene appliances. It is a technical reference. The book is a copy of a hand-typed manuscript. 7 introductory pages about Dr. Lahde and a 7 page appendix have been added. The appendix is a translation (courtesy of Ursula and Heinz Baumann) of a 1941 Ehrich & Graetz booklet with photos of Albert, Adolf and Max Graetz. There are more than 288 detailed line drawings to illustrate Lahde's writing.

"Oil and Kerosene Lamps in Australia", by Peter Cuffley. $39, including US shipping. An excellent reference going WAY beyond Australia! Excellent lamp and lamping history (very readable!), and images from Miller and B&H US catalogues, among others. HIGH recommendation as basic lamping study book!

"Victorian Lighting, Dietz Salesman catalogue, reprint. $55, including US shipping. Catalogue reprint covers Dietz from about 1860 to ca 1866 publication. BEAUTIFUL reproduction of hand tinted color catalogue pages, and a history of the family and firm. A great example of high-grade commercial printing of the post-Civil War period.

"New Light on Old Lamps", by Dr. Larry Freeman. $28, including US shipping. A somewhat discomboobulated collection of catalogue images, rambling text and almost total lack of organization. But boy, does Freeman include the images! This book is a classic reference source, although it may drive you mildly batty! Is this a poor "review"? Nope, "just the facts, Ma'am!" It's another "gotta have"!

THE TILLEY LAMP CONNECTION

by Cherrill Theobald

This is a 52 pp B & W Illustrated genealogical dissertation researched and written by Cherill Theobald, Great Granddaughter of Frederick Tilley, which traces the Tilley family and business from Victorian beginings to the present day. It was written as a requirement for a genealogical qualification and was not originally intended to be a published work. As such it is not a collectors guide although, on first reading, it did add to my knowledge of the products Tilley made. It is mainly factual without much anecdotal information but it should be of interest to any collector of Tilley lamps and lanterns with an interest in the historical family background of Frederick and William Tilley the inventors of the famous Tilley Lamp. [Review by Neil McRae]

Copies are available from Cherrill at a cost of £11.00 sterling Plus P & H. To order, contact Cherrill via e-mail at combsford@netscapeonline.co.uk

center-draft Kerosene Lamps 1884-1940

by Bill Courter

Friends, we have been waiting for a book of this scope and quality for years, and it is finally here! I personally think this is the most important and significant book on kerosene lighting produced to date. Is everything you could possibly want to know about center draft lighting to be found in about 450 pages between these covers? Perhaps not, but as Bill notes, if it isn't there, clues to search for it probably are, and this book could be the launching pad for years of research. Bill covers 52 companies, and hundreds of brands. The pages are full of B&W photos showing many aspects and identifying features. YEARS of collecting and research has produced an amazing book, one that I have dipped into probably a hundred times in the 6 weeks that I have had a copy. It is a permanent feature on my desk (along with TLCG II and a printout of the PLC-Coleman Edition). It's rather heavy, but it will be one of those references you should carry with you when you go lamping, or you will probably wish you did!

This book (published by Collector Books) costs $24.95, and is available autographed from the author, Bill Courter (brtknight@aol.com), or at bookstores (at least in the US). For mail orders, add $8.95 Priority Mail shipping in USA. Europe is $37.00 or 2 books for $50.00. Contact author for rates to Canada and other overseas locations.
If you are interested in kerosene lamps, don't miss this one! (Review and recommendation by Fil Graff)

RESTORATION of ANTIQUE KEROSENE & ELECTRIC LIGHTING HANDBOOK

by Richard Dudley, "The Lamp Doctor"

Probably the best way to introduce this book by a Founder Guild member is to use Richard's own Introduction:
"Many of the techniques/solutions given in this book were originally used to respond to lighting questions (almost like "Stump the Chump") that were asked by users on our lighting website. Thie book was written to capture and share the knowledge gained from over 35 years experience in lamp repair/restoration."
Richard has produced a richly varied book, full of images and suggestions. The subjects range from specific repairs to branded lamps, to tips for fixing problem Aladdins, to electrification techniques to repairs to Coleman Quick-Lites and more. Broad ranging? You bet! As an amateur restorer myself, I heartily endorse Richard's lessons.

Please contact Richard Dudley at his website at "A Bit of Antiquity" (www.lampdoctor.com), or at his mailing address: 1412 Forest Lane, Woodbridge, VA 22191 USA for book price and postage to your location.

PAYPAL instructions

What appears to be a very simple method of paying for merchandise is actually a Machiavellian plot by e-Bay to make more money. IF you can pay a bill to a vendor in the same country you live in, and you have the cash in your account to cover it, it won't cost you a cent. BUT: if you pay, and your credit card covers the amount, the SELLER is charged about 5% for your convenience. If there is a currency exchange needed for your local money, there is a 2.5% charge to the SELLER. The Guild and I are tired of eating these charges! As of July 10, 2007, ALL payments to me, or to the Guild, from credit card Paypal balances will carry an 5% of the basic invoice additional fee, and transactions in foreign curriencies that need exchange will be charged 2.5% of the basic invoice. For example, a $10 invoice from a credit card Paypal balance will be charged $.50 (invoice total becomes $10.50), and if your account is in British Pounds, a $.25 currency excahnge will be added. If both apply, then your incoice is $10.75. I am STILL losing money even with the charges, but that's the simplest I can make it to come at least close. IF you neglect to ADD these charges, and Paypal tries to deduct from the basic invoice, I shall simply refuse the transaction. If you wish to try again, I will add another 5% to the invoice to cover the extra bother. YOU know your situation when you place the order, and I will count on your honesty to inform me. :: Fil Graff, Guild Secretary ::
